Contents May Vary is the Manchester based artist collective of Alice Bradshaw, Liz Murphy and Richard Shields. They collaborate curatorially and use the alternative spaces they exhibit in as a catalyst for their individual artistic practices. Within each artists’ work is a different approach exploring the ready-made through sculpture, animation, drawing, painting, performance, installation and intervention.
Contents May Vary is an artist collective of limited means other than savvy and gall. They show anywhere with a roof and sometimes without. There work is informed and informal, giving their audience of all walks a varied artistic experience.
Alice Bradshaw works with a wide range of media and processes involving the manipulation of everyday objects and materials. Mass-produced, anonymous objects are often rendered dysfunctional caricatures of themselves, addressing concepts of purpose and futility. Alice creates or accentuates subtleties, blurring distinctions between the absurd and the mundane.
Liz Murphy’s work primarily explores social traditions, our ongoing attachment to popular culture and our abilit to define ourselves through nostalgia. Using simple line drawings, stop frame animation, large scale installation and performance intervention, Liz often incorporates familiar social references from both mass media and substandard television to build narratives that are both imaginary yet familiar, like a story an aunt may have told you as a child or a plot line from Murder She Wrote.
Richard Shields: Start off from drawing, travel for five miles until you come to the lights then turn left onto painting for six miles until you come to a cross roads, go off road into sculpture looking back at drawing and painting intermittently. Make the occasional pit stop at whatever objects and experiences are to hand for extra fuel and help with further directions.
